James Alexander and William Alexander papers, 1711-1909 1711-1770.

The Alexander Papers span the one hundred ninety-eight years between 1711 and 1909, and includes letters, letter copybooks, a journal, wills, deeds, newspaper clippings, account books, and wills. The journal series contains the earliest part of the collection. The single entry is a journal kept by James Alexander while on board H.M.S. Arundell from 1711 to 1713. The record books include listings for lands as early as 1664 and as late as 1764.

James Alexander was a lawyer in New Jersey and New York during the eighteenth century. Born in Scotland in 1691, Alexander fought in the Rebellion of 1715, which resulted in the exile of the Stuarts from England. That year, he moved to the United States and became the surveyor general of the Province of New Jersey.
